The book Guinness World Records collates and publishes notable records of many types, from first and best to worst human achievements, to extremes in the natural world and beyond.

Discrete logarithm records

Discrete logarithm records are the best results achieved to date in solving the discrete logarithm problem, which is the problem of finding solutions x to the equation g x = h given elements g and h of a finite cyclic group G. The difficulty of this problem is the basis for the security of several cryptographic systems, including Diffie–Hellman key agreement, ElGamal encryption, the ElGamal signature scheme, the Digital Signature Algorithm, and the elliptic curve cryptography analogs of these. Common choices for G used in these algorithms include the multiplicative group of integers modulo ...

Hot water bottle blowing

Hot water bottle blowing is the deliberate inflation of a hot-water bottle by blowing. Air is breathed into the bottle until it stretches beyond its capacity and consequently explodes. It is a challenging feat of strength which is included in the Guinness World Records. The challenge is most commonly undertaken by breathing air from the mouth, though it has also been achieved by blowing through the nose. The activity presents a potential hazard for physical injury to eyes and lungs.

Integer factorization records

Integer factorization is the process of determining which prime numbers divide a given positive integer. Doing this quickly has applications in cryptography. The difficulty depends on both the size and form of the number and its prime factors; it is currently very difficult to factorize large semiprimes.

A prime number is a positive integer with no divisors other than 1 and itself, excluding 1. Euclid recorded a proof that there is no largest prime number, and many mathematicians and hobbyists continue to search for large prime numbers. Many of the largest known primes are Mersenne primes, numbers that are one less than a power of two. As of December 2018, the eight largest known primes are Mer ...

Largest naval battle in history

The title of the largest naval battle in history is disputed between adherents of different criteria which include the numbers of personnel and/or vessels involved in the battle, and the total displacement of the vessels involved. While battles fought in modern times are comparatively well-documented, the figures from those in pre-Renaissance times are generally believed to be exaggerated by contemporary chroniclers.

Many of these universities, particularly those in the United States, are actually systems of separate university campuses, and may not acc ...

List of longest prison sentences

This is a list of longest prison sentences ever given to a single person, worldwide. Listed are instances where people have been sentenced to jail terms in excess of a human lifetime. Note that many national legislations worldwide do not allow for such sentences. Since the sentence given is not necessarily equivalent to time served, see the list of longest prison sentences served for those who have spent the longest continuous time in prison.

List of longest prison sentences served

This is a list of longest prison sentences served by a single person, worldwide, without a period of freedom followed by a second conviction. These cases rarely coincide with the longest prison sentences given, because some countries have laws that do not allow sentences without parole for convicts to remain in prison beyond a given number of years. This color indicates cases where imprisonment is still ongoing

Longest English sentence

There have been several claims for the longest sentence in the English language, usually with claims that revolve around the longest printed sentence, because there is no limit on the possible length of a written English sentence. At least one linguistics textbook concludes that, in theory, "there is no longest English sentence." A sentence can be made arbitrarily long by successive iterations, such as "Someone thinks that someone thinks that someone thinks that.," or by combining shorter clauses in various ways. For example, sentences can be extended by recursively embedding clauses one i ...

Longest recorded sniper kills

Reports regarding the longest recorded sniper kills that contain information regarding the shooting distance and the identity of the sniper have been presented to the general public since 1967. Snipers in modern warfare have had a substantial history following the development of long distance weaponry. As weapons, ammunition, and aids to determine ballistic solutions improved, so too did the distance from which a kill could be targeted. In mid-2017 it was reported that an unnamed Canadian special forces operator, based in Iraq, had set a new record of 3.540 m, beating the record previously ...

One competitor holds the record for 469 stations, as he had competed before the January 2017 opening of the Second Avenue Subway. All the other competitors hold the record for 468 stations, as they had all competed prior to both the September 2015 opening of the 7 Subway Ex ...

Tube Challenge

The Tube Challenge is the competition for the fastest time to travel to all London Underground stations, tracked as a Guinness World Record since 1960. List of longest wooden ships

This is a list of the worlds longest wooden ships. The vessels are sorted by ship length including bowsprit, if known. Finding the worlds longest wooden ship is not straightforward since there are several contenders, depending on which definitions are used. For example, some of these ships benefited from substantial iron or even steel components since the flexing of wood members can lead to significant leaking as the wood members become longer. Some of these ships were not very seaworthy, and a few sank either immediately after launch or soon thereafter. Some of the more recent large ships ...

List of largest cuckoo clocks

Several unusually large cuckoo clocks have been built and installed in different cities of the world with the aim of attracting visitors, as part of publicity of a cuckoo clock shop, or to serve as a landmark for the community and town. Some have been awarded with the title of "Worlds Largest Cuckoo Clock" by the Guinness World Records.

World's longest hot dog

The current worlds longest meat hot dog record holder measured 203.8 metres and was manufactured by Novex of Paraguay in 2011. Sara Lee Corp. made a hot dog, 1.996 feet long, in commemoration of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Guinness World Records does not reflect this record in any of its publications as of 2006. Speculation surrounding the 1996-foot record is that although the hot dog was most likely continuous, the bun was not. In October 2017 the town of Flensburg in Germany claimed to have manufactured the Worlds longest hot dog with 218 metres.
